Key areas for research - Charlotte Woodward & Kim Bradbury

1.      In researching films for our coursework, we have focused on different types of horror and thriller genres that can influence our ideas and develop them, challenging our project to be original and different compared to your usual horror. 2 of which we have researched in depth, ‘scream’ and ‘the strangers’. We have focused mainly on these two movies because they are both very different, yet similar in different ways. Scream is not a recent film; made in 1996, whereas The Strangers is a more recent; made in 2008. Scream has been our inspiration in which we have used ideas and noted ways to produce my final movie. In Charlotte's project it will be an intruder from in inside of her house where as in Kim's film "The Visitors" will be surrounding her house on the outside. It is the same concept, but we feel that it will be more original and different to others due to our thorough research and ideas. However, during our research we have come across films we didn’t particularly enjoy, or feel was suited for the ideas we had. One of which was ‘Saw’ – the plot of the film was definitely not how I wanted to interpret our films, also its gory scenes repelled us into researching further. We also didn’t enjoy ‘Halloween’ as it was too old, in a sense that I couldn’t note ideas from it, and the effects were not very well produced.
2.
Our media products presents itself to mainly the teenage – adult social group. This is due to the plot of the movie, and how it’s produced. I feel that if it were a real movie, it wouldn’t be suitable for children. I’m aware that the highest percentage in film ratings are usually people aged 16-24, which is exactly our aim to present a good movie that would attract people of those ages. The characters in my project include a teenager and an adult, which promote those age groups.
3.
The media institution which could promote my media product would be either between ‘Lionsgate’ and ‘Icon’. We have researched both of these institutions and discovered that they have promoted many horror’s, some of which similar to mine. Lionsgate promoted the Scream trilogy, and Icon has promoted Twilight and The Strangers. All of which we have researched in the hope of influencing our ideas. We think if one of the institutions were to promote our separate projects, it would then promote the company much advertisement when shown e.g. on TV.
4.
The audience we are going to target for our media products would be teenagers and adults. We will do this by good advertisement and good dramatic and intense effects in the first 2 minutes of the opening sequence. We would explain to our audiences a brief analysis of what our project contains to leave them on the edge, wanting to view what we have each produced. We have discussed our ideas with each of our familes and friends and our teacher, and they have all given us great feedback to support our individual projects. They have been very honest and given us other ideas which we have definitely considered, and will experiment with when making the projects. The feedback we have received have effected some of the decisions we’ve made, and to think about how we are going to film; certain angles the lighting and audio. Overall, we think the development process in making my product will be a great success if we plan well and thorough.
